Official Rules for the Move Mountains: Mountain Strong Scholarship

Overview

The Mountain Strong Scholarship program provides two (2) $5,000 scholarships to high school seniors from Yancey County and Mitchell County who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene. By submitting an application, applicants agree to the following official rules.

Eligibility

  1. Applicants must:

    • Be a graduating senior from a high school in Yancey or Mitchell County, North Carolina, or a homeschooled full-time resident of Yancey or Mitchell County with proof of expected completion of at least 12th grade curriculum.

    • Be directly or indirectly impacted by Hurricane Helene.

    • Plan to attend an accredited post-secondary institution (college, university, vocational school, community college (or similar program) within the upcoming academic year.

  2. Applicants must submit all required documents by the application deadline to be considered.

Application Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must:

  1. Complete the application form, including:

    • Full name, contact information, and high school details.

    • Address of permanent residency in Yancey or Mitchell County.

    • Proof of enrollment or application to a post-secondary program.

  2. Submit a 500-word minimum - 1,000-word maximum essay on:

    • How Hurricane Helene has impacted them, their family, or their community.

    • How they intend to use the scholarship to achieve their educational and career goals.

  3. Provide the following supporting documents:

    • High school transcript or proof of expected completion of at least a 12th grade curriculum if homeschooled.

    • Letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or community leader.

    • Any additional documents requested as part of the application process.

Selection Criteria

Scholarship recipients will be selected based on:

  1. The quality and thoughtfulness of their essay.

  2. Commitment to furthering their education and potential for community impact.

The selection committee’s decisions are final and binding.

Award Details

  1. Two scholarships, each valued at $5,000, will be awarded.

    • One recipient will be selected from Yancey County.

    • One recipient will be selected from Mitchell County.

  2. Scholarships will be paid directly to the recipient’s chosen institution upon enrollment verification, or to an educational fund with limitations on withdrawal.

  3. Funds must be used for tuition, fees, books, or educational expenses.

Deadlines

  1. All applications must be submitted by April 11, 2025 at 11:59 PM EST.

  2. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

  3. Recipients will be notified by April 30, 2025.

General Conditions

  1. Mountain Strong Recovery Network reserves the right to verify eligibility and application information.

  2. False or misleading information will result in disqualification.

  3. Scholarship funds are non-transferable and must be used in accordance with these rules.

  4. All personal information collected as part of the application process will be used solely for scholarship selection and administration and will not be shared with third parties without the applicant’s consent. Nothwithstanding the foregoing, by applying, applicants grant Mountain Strong the right to use their name, likeness, and essay excerpts for promotional purposes related to the scholarship program without further compensation, unless prohibited by law.
